Crossing the country by car for a month during the Credit Crunch and the first 100 days of Obama’s presidency, Delphine Bedel photographed the stunning scenery, eclectic architecture and the people, heart and soul of Route 66. With incisiveness and wit, her highly personal documentary and visual diary captures the afterimage of the 60′s prosperity and exuberance, and the aftermath of the recent crisis. For her second solo exhibition in the gallery, a selection of her photographs and road movie will be presented.
This legendary route was for over half a century the main access from East to West, crossing 8 states. The Mother Road. Taking a bite out of its glamorous lure, Route 66 was decommissioned in 1984 and officially disappeared. Replaced by new Interstate Highways bypassing small towns, it created a great strain for the economy along the old road and its inhabitants.
From the Grand Canyon to the ‘Magnificent Mile’ of motels and drive-thru chain stores, from the Dust Bowl years to the hope and angst of the near future, unexpected perspectives unfold along the journey across America, and reflect upon a country in a disrupted present.
Home on the road, travelling together with singer-songwriter Luke Nyman, revisiting the landmarks of American Beat culture, filming with hand-held camera and improvising music performances in many places along the road trip. Bedel filmed and recorded stories from the ‘Children of the Mother Road’: a cowboy’s wife, motel workers, war veterans, artists, musicians and historians, all had stories to tell.
Read MoreFor the third year, I will be lecturer at Geneva University of Art and Design, where I initiated a publishing course and the artist’s book series Hard Copy. These editions are produced in collaboration with Barbara Fedier and various departments of the schools, as well as Swiss graphic designers and co-published by Monospace Press. This position also involves thesis supervision and organising events, lectures and exhibitions in relation to Hard Copy. The first seven edition were released in 2010, with a talk with Seth Siegelaub, Daniel McClean and Dexter Sinister, and reading performance by the artists at LiYH in Geneva. The talks can be heard back on the Laptop Radio website. The second edition were presented at the Amsterdam Art/Book Fair and the exhibition ‘vue sur la mer’ in Geneva in 2011.

The first Amsterdam Art/Book Fair will take place the 14 & 15 of May 2011, presenting a high end international selection of art publications. The fair aims to reflect on the emerging practices and new development in art, through a selection of publishers from 16 countries. Printed matter and digital media edited by independent publishers and artists, magazines and institutions, art schools and graphic design studios are featured in this first edition.
Conferences and talks by keynote speakers, book launches, artist talks and performances will take place during the Amsterdam Art/Book Fair. Guests include Kenneth Goldsmith, Metahaven, Clive Phillpot, Mathieu Copeland. A unique series of curated tables will offer a selection of publications and posters. Book trading and signing, encounters and conversations will take place at ‘Black Market’, an informal meeting place for artists, designers, publishers and collectors.
The Amsterdam Art/Book Fair is initiated and organised by Delphine Bedel (Monospace Press) and Yannick Bouillis( Shashin/Offrpint), and is hosted by the Flemish Cultural Centre De Brakke Grond. The Amsterdam Art/Book Fair aspires to be a meeting place during the Amsterdam Art Week. The entrance to the AA/BF is free.

The artist book ‘The Detroit Diary’ by Jimini Hignett, designed by Anna Haas and edited by Delphine Bedel was one of the 19 books nominated for the award. ‘The Most Beautiful Swiss Books‘ competition was established to promote and reward top-quality book design in Switzerland. It was established at the behest of the famous typographer and designer Jan Tschichold in 1943. The competition is open to graphic designers, publishers and printers. Annually, the Federal Office of Culture receives around 400 submissions. A five-member, internationally staffed jury, currently chaired by Cornel Windlin, selects the most beautiful Swiss books each year.
What qualifies as a Swiss book?: A book is considered a Swiss book when it fulfils at least one of the following three criteria: the book was designed by a Swiss designer, the publisher has its headquarters in Switzerland, or the printer has its headquarters in Switzerland. The jury’s criteria: In judging the submissions to the competition, the jury takes into account each book’s overall concept, graphic design and typography, and pays particular attention to innovation and originality.
